WebAdvisor is NOT intended to sell you any McAfee products, scare you, or to try to get you to remove your currently-installed AV product when WebAdvisor alerts that your AV or Firewall are off, the alert is genuine and is intended to be helpful. So, does it mean that McAfee has resorted to a scareware-like tactic to promote its products? Since the appropriate software from other vendors is already present at the time of the alerts, the behavior looks similar to that of classical scareware.

No friendly 'Get more info' or 'What could be causing the problem?' button is prominent on the alert banner. These alerts are disturbing to many users (scares the hell out of my elderly parents, for example) who would be inclined to press the 'fix' button, the only other option being to 'ignore' an apparently very dangerous situation. WebAdvisor alerts prompt a user to 'fix' the problem, which, apparently, implies the use of another McAfee product. So, my first question is: what exactly triggers the alerts? I can imagine that there might be a delay while an antivirus checks with its update server, but this is not a reason to definitively call a computer unprotected. At the same time, the antivirus applications indicate that they operate normally and Window generates no alerts in Action Center.

SiteAdvisor claims that they lack virus protection or that the firewall if off. On many occasions, I experienced a similar behavior on multiple computers, running BitDefender or Symantec Endpoint Protection.
